A few moments after the meeting had ended, Mmayen rushed into the office reception, breathing heavily.

“Good morning!” She said hastily as she met her other colleagues.

“Hi Mmayen…”

“Good morning Mmayen…” They responded.

“The boss asked of you, I think you should see him at his office.” Clara the receptionist said.

Mmayen held her chest, “Was he angry?”

“I don’t know o. I didn’t read his countenance.” Clara said.

Mmayen walked hastily to the staff toilet, applied a shimmering lip gloss quickly and dashed out to Kenechukwu’s office. She knocked softly.

“Come in.” The voice skipped her heart. She waited a few seconds before she opened the door. When their eyes met, it gazed with a passion.

“Good morning sir…” She said girlishly.

“Why are you here by this time?” Kenechukwu asked. He took his eyes away from her and concentrated on the magazine he had in his hands.

“Sir,” She paused, took a deep breath and continued. “I had to rush home to get some clothes. It took time to get to my house from your area. I didn’t see a cab on time. “

He looked as though he was prepared to give her a piece of his mind.

“Do you have the company’s constitution booklet?”

“Yes sir.” She nodded.

“Are you aware that you’re not supposed to be late for Fridays meetings? It’s compulsory for every staff of this company?”

“Yes sir.”

“Are you also aware that you deserve a query for coming to work late?”

“But sir…”

“I don’t care where you slept last night. You should have planned your time.” His voice was thick. Mmayen couldn’t believe her ears. It took several minutes before she could speak. “It wasn’t my fault. You kept me in your office till almost 10pm. You witnessed how stressed I was. Our security man couldn’t let me in because I passed curfew time.”

“Who cares? You’ll get a query from Solomon your assistant.”

“No you can’t query me for something you caused!” She yelled, a drop of tear fell from her eyes as she felt her face burn in anger.

“Are you yelling at me?” He asked softly. Standing to his feet. She’d already gone crazy seeing his height. She was madly in love with him and couldn’t control herself. She began to unbutton her shirt….

“What are you doing?” Kenechukwu asked looking amazed.

“If this is what is making you hate me, then come have me.” She swiped a tear and was about pulling out her brassiere when Kenechukwu rushed to the door and locked it.

“You must be crazy. Don’t do this.” He held her shirt. “I am giving you a query because you need it. It’s just what I can do to any other staff. It’s not a sack.”

“I know…”

“No you don’t. You thought I am querying you because you didn’t let me touch you.”
“I thought so too. But… sir…”

“But what?”

“I want you, I really do… I am just scared…”
She said softly. Kenechukwu looked at her as though she’d dropped a bomb on his head.

“We can’t talk about this right now. Not here. Yesterday was the right moment to.” He said as he held her shirt and buttoned it quickly. Kissing her on the forehead he said, “It’s weekend. Let’s see tonight. I will drive you home early, you pick a few of your clothes, and I will make love to you.”

She became aroused instantly as he held her lip and kissed it gently. “I won’t hurt you. I won’t break your heart. I know what you’re afraid of.” He said.

She nodded calmly.

“Solomon will write you a query, but it doesn’t mean anything. It won’t reduce your promotions. Neither will it stop me from loving you.” He said sincerely.

That day, Mmayen smiled all through. She couldn’t take her heart off the things Kenechukwu said to her.

“Cancel the query for Mmayen.” Kenechukwu said to Solomon. Solomon couldn’t say a word. He was surprised. It was the first time Kenechukwu canceled a query for anyone. He’d wondered the excuse Mmayen had given that made him to cancel her query.

After work, he’d driven her to her house to get some of her clothes and toiletries for the weekend stay at his house.

On their way back from Mmayen’s house, they stopped by at a wine bar in Victoria Island.
“This is where I loved to be when Sarafina was in my life.” Kenechukwu said.

“Who was that?” Mmayen asked.

“My ex girlfriend.”

“I thought your ex was Gina? You once mentioned Gina to me.”

“Yeah, she was the girl I loved so much.”

A lump suddenly filled her throat that made swallowing impossible.

“Are you okay?” Kenechukwu asked. She nodded hastily as she sipped more wine.

“Why did you two break up?” She asked as she dropped the empty glass cup on the table.

“Gina or Sarafina?” He asked.

“The both of them.”
“Okay.” He scoffed and continued. “She was AS. I am AS. Marrying her wasn’t just possible. I mean Sarafina.”

“And Gina?” She asked.

“Gina was caught making out with my cousin. She used to be the love of my life.”_

“Oh. No. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay. God has reasons for everything, if she was still there, I wouldn’t have wanted to have a relationship with you.” He said calmly.

“So, where is she now?”

“Who?”

“Gina and the other one.”

“Sarafina?” He asked, and she nodded.
“She is at Abuja. She works there now. Gina and I separated long ago. Sarafina and I are fine, I see her on Instagram often.”

“Do you two still talk?”

“well, once in a while we chat each other. She is in a relationship with the son of one senator like that.” He sipped his wine.

She had noticed she was talking too much about Kenechukwu’s exes and that Kenechukwu might suspect that she was trying to invade his private life, so she changed the topic of discussion and asked, “What do you think my genotype is?”

“I already know it’s AA.” He said simply.

Wine spewed from Mmayen’s mouth as she bursted into laughter. “How did you know?”

“I know. Have you forgotten you have to run all tests before working with me? Your result is in the cabinet of other files, I checked it out, you’re AA Genotype.” Kenechukwu said. Mmayen stared at him as she smiled heartily.
