Dr. Winifred explained further about surrogacy, while they quietly watched and listened to her.
“If you wanna go for the traditional surrogate, it’s fine and cheaper.”
“We don’t need something cheap,” Andy retorted.
“Okay. The truth about traditional surrogate is that she,” the doctor said, pointing at Kadiaka, “will have to be the baby’s biological mother.”
“Why?” Sana asked confused.
“That’s because it’s her egg that will be fertilized by the king’s sperm.”
“That won’t happen. She won’t carry my husband’s child. She will carry our child in her womb. That’s all we want.”
“Okay, fine. Then you’re opting for gestational surrogacy. A technique called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) now makes it possible to gather eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father, and place the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate. The surrogate then carries the baby until birth. She doesn’t have any genetic ties to the child because it wasn’t her egg that was used.”
“Good. I like the IVF. It’s fine by me,” Sana said confidently.
“May I ask why you’re opting for a surrogate?” Dr. Winifred asked.
Sana turned to Andy and when Andy saw that she was staring at him, he said;
“I don’t want my wife to go through the stress of carrying a baby. We are fine with surrogacy.”
“Okay. It’s okay. If you are ready, we are ready,” Dr. Winifred said.
“We are ready like right now,” Sana said.
“Let’s see if her body is ready first,” Doctor Winifred said.
They conducted several tests on all three of them. It took two months to go through all processes before Andy finally left for Singapore.
Sana was anxious. And every single day she would ask Kadiaka if she has seen her menses.
A few days before Andy’s return from Singapore, Kadiaka knocked on Sana’s bedroom door softly. She was sad and her eyes were misty.
“Come in,” Sana said.
When she saw Kadiaka, she got down from her bed and walked toward her.
“My menses just showed up,” she said sadly. “How do I face the King?”
Sana’s face hardened. She touched her shoulders and leaned forward.
“We keep trying, you’ll meet Dr. Wini on the last day of your period. I believe this will work out. I strongly believe,” Sana said.
Kadiaka let a small smile curl her lips.
“Thank you ma,” she prostrated and walked away.
After Andy returned, they conducted another IVF, and another sperm insemination was done. ICSI was used to enhance the fertilization process of IVF by injecting a single sperm directly into a mature egg. As a result, an embryo was formed and placed into Kadiaka’s uterus.
Many months passed and it failed again.
“I think I should get pregnant myself,” Sana said anxiously.
“Why?” Andy asked.
“See, we have tried surrogacy for six good times and it’s not working. This girl has been with us for almost a year now. We can do something.”
“We can’t do just anything,” Andy said, “We will keep trying. I don’t want you to have babies now.”
“But I can.”
Andy sighed furiously, “See, I don’t really have enough strength to keep talking about this.”
He walked out of the bedroom to the sitting room. It was almost midnight and he’d heard the washing machine spinning. He wondered who was in the laundry room by that time of the night, and when he got there, he saw Kadiaka.
She had a wrapper around her breast down to her knees. Andy’s heart beat faster when he saw her. He hardly talked to her, he only stared at her beautiful skin anytime he walked pass her.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
“By this time? Why didn’t you leave the clothes for the cleaners?”
“I’m not used to people washing my clothes. I like to wash them by myself,” she said lightly.
“You should. You’ll be carrying my baby in no time. So, you’re a part of the royal family until the baby comes. You won’t be allowed to do things like this.”
“I’m sorry Sa,” she said humbly.
“Come with me, let’s talk,” he ordered her. She walked hastily behind him and stood at the sitting room while he sat on a couch.
She stood straight, not looking at his face.
“How old are you?” he asked.
“Twenty-five sir,” she replied and finally looked at his face.
“You’re beautiful,” he said. She nodded, unable to answer.
He liked her hair, and he wanted to have a feel of it, but he couldn’t just say it. He couldn’t even tell her to come a bit closer, so that he could have a feel of her skin. He’d been wanting to have her a long time ago, but the fear of breaking protocols held him back. She was supposed to be a surrogate and not his lover. But he wanted her to be more than that. She was so innocent he felt he would spoil her if he tried to force it.
