“Sex? With who?” Nneoma asked.
“With your husband when he comes back of course! See,” Editi said, “My husband works with Mobil, he leaves for two weeks only, and he comes back to be with me for two weeks. I always make sure I spend a lot of time with him when he is home. We go lodge in hotels, make love and lie naked by the beach and all. My husband is very romantic, so he makes the moments worth the while.”
“Lucky you Editi,” she rushed at her drink. Editi held her hand firmly.
“That won’t help you conceive. It won’t help us!” she said soothingly.
“It will help take away these pains and loneliness that I feel in my soul,” Nneoma cried out.
“Don’t cry,” Editi said, as she dropped gently from the couch to the floor where Nneoma was sitting down. She sat beside her and held her hands tightly. “We will win this. Maybe God has reasons why he brought us together,” she said softly.
“I believe you,” she wiped the tears from her eyes as she laughed with tears in her eyes, and hugged Editi.
“We will talk about business tomorrow, let me make dinner,” she paused and added, “I would love you to eat my ofe nsala and judge it. Then we can talk about how to get a page manager and all that.”
The two women exchanged phone numbers and followed each other on Instagram instantly.
“I should be leaving now, my husband will be leaving for work tomorrow, I have to pack his bag.”
“Aw! You’re leaving me,” Nneoma said in a babyish manner.
“Don’t worry, I will be coming to see you often when he leaves for work tomorrow. Let me go arrange his stuff for his trip,” Editi stood to her feet. Nneoma stood too.
“Editi, thank you so much for coming, you don’t know what you have done for me today. I’m really grateful.”
She hugged her gently, the scent of her perfume clinging to her dress.
Editi went home that day, thinking of how successful Nneoma would be if she took up the bulk cooking business just the way she’d imagined. She thought of giving her new ideas about how her business could grow.
“You stayed for too long in there,” Akwang said.
“I’m sorry, you know we women get along with each other so easily.”
“What where you two talking about?” Akwang asked playfully.
“About us!” she exclaimed and then added softly, “She has been married for over five years now without a child.”
The bedroom was silent for a while, then Akwang asked, “Oh well, she will get pregnant if she sorts out the problem that is making her not to get pregnant.”
“She doesn’t have problems,” Editi said boldly.
“You barely know her. You don’t even know her and you’re almost swearing she doesn’t have a problem.”
“It doesn’t take long to know people. Her husband isn’t always around. He works offshore too.”
“Then that is the problem. It should be solved. He should apply for a leave and be with his wife,” he said calmly as he touched her hands.
She sighed and took his hands gently to her chest.
“I’ll miss you when you leave tomorrow,” she said softly.
“Ask Annie to come stay with you when you’re bored.”
“Annie has her friends. She has her life too.”
“So, how are you going to cope in this big house alone?”
“Have you forgotten I have a new neighbor friend?” she winked at him.
He held her to himself and kissed her warmly on the lips.
“She needs a friend now. Don’t forget I have never really had friends. You’re my only friend. You and my sister,” she said. His mouth came back to hers and he kissed her again, stealing her breath, stealing her will.
“Thank you for marrying me,” he muttered huskily, his breath warm on her lips. “You complete me.”
His words weakened her. She held him, and fell softly into his arms.
“I’ll miss you so much,” she said as she squeezed her eyes shut and took a long breath.
He began to pull off her clothes gently.
“Have you had dinner?” she asked.
He nodded calmly, “Yes I served myself. I couldn’t wait any longer. I knew that you and your new neighbor had a lot to talk about: women talk of course,” he said.
She began to kiss him and they made love that night. They made love like it was their last time. It was passionate and exciting.
